We are a small, experienced team with deep roots in the social sector - and a genuine belief that technology should be a force for good.
OUR PURPOSE
Born From Purpose
Technicalities was founded in 2002 with a clear and specific purpose: to bring technology back to the nonprofit sector.
Our founder spent 15 years as a social worker before she ever wrote a line of code. She worked in gender-based violence shelters, youth shelters, homelessness services, and with pregnant and parenting teens. She understood the weight of that work – the complexity of the people it serves, the constraints organizations operate under, and what it means when a system fails someone who has nowhere else to turn.
In the late 1990s, she fell in love with technology. She retrained as a programmer and saw immediately that the tools being built for the business world weren’t reaching the organizations that needed them most.
So she built a company to change that.
More than two decades later, we still bring sector knowledge that can’t be learned from a brief – because we lived it first.

Our team has been together for an average of more than 13 years. In the technology industry, that’s almost unheard of. Over the years, we have been shaped by extraordinary people who gave deeply to this work and to the clients we serve, and their contributions live on in how we show up every day. For our clients, that kind of continuity means institutional memory, genuine trust, and relationships that hold – not a rotating cast of contractors.

We are honest with our clients — about timelines, about costs, about what’s possible. We don’t oversell. We don’t disappear when things get hard. And we hold ourselves to the same ethical standards we encourage in the organizations we serve.
Creativity
The organizations we work with face complex challenges with limited resources. Creative thinking — not just creative design — is how we help organizations stretch limited resources into lasting impact. We love a hard problem and we bring genuine ingenuity to solving it.
Social Responsibility
We believe business can and should be a force for good. That belief is embedded in our structure, our supplier relationships, our pro bono commitments, and our B Corp™ certification. It shapes how we hire, who we work with, and how we give back.

This Work
The organizations we serve are doing some of the hardest, most important work imaginable – providing mental health support, advocating for housing rights, connecting survivors to safety, offering community based health care, supporting those who face poverty and food insecurity. They do it with small teams, constrained budgets, and enormous hearts.
Too often, technology has felt like one more thing working against them rather than for them – complicated systems, inaccessible platforms, vendors who don’t understand the issues.
We built Technicalities to be something different. A technology partner that understands the sector from the inside, takes accessibility seriously, and builds for the long term. One that measures success not just in launches and deliverables, but in whether the tools we build actually help the people they’re meant to serve.
That’s why most of our clients have been with us for years.
